Machangulo hosts World Day to Combat Drought and Desertification

The Ndelane Primary School located in the Administrative Post of Machangulo, buffer zone of the Maputo Special Reserves (MSR) and Ponta de Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR) hosted yesterday on 17 July 2019 activities regarding to the celebration of the World Day of Combat against Drought and Desertification.
To this purpose MSR and PPMR Community Development Department, responsible for carrying out the activity at the school, selected a set of educational and interactive activities with children, highlighting: 1) Lecture on causes and consequences of drought and desertification; 2) Display of videos and educational images on the two themes; 3) Room for questions and answers and still; 4) a contest in which Ndelane students were invited to present drawings and poems about the phenomena and in return awarded with teaching materials.
It should be noted that this activity is part of a program to support the six existing primary schools in Machangulo where each school was invited to choose two commemorative dates related to the environment and conservation and the reserves will support with planning and implementation of the same activities. Still in these schools are being implemented, with the same support MSR and PPMR, a soccer championship; school farms and; eco-clubs to promote good environmental practices within schools.
World Day to Combat Drought and Desertification is celebrated annually on 17 June since 1995 the year that the day was proclaimed by the United Nations. This day aims to promote public awareness of international cooperation in combating desertification and the effects of drought worldwide.
