How to get there

Land Area

From Maputo
Access via the Katembe bridge on a 68 km paved road.
Travel time is estimated at 50 min.
Two accesses to Maputo National Park:

  • the Futi Gate (the most used for those coming in the Maputo-Ponta do Ouro direction)
  • the Gala Gate (more convenient for visitors who go to points of interest on the east side of the Park – this gate is Closed at the moment).

From the Ressano Garcia border
Take the EN4 until Shoprite and then turn right on the EN2 until Boane, then head towards Ponta do Ouro, travelling 134 km during about 3 hours.

From the Ponta do Ouro / Kosi Bay border
The best route to Maputo National Park is from the Ponta do Ouro / Kosi Bay border.
The border is at 673 km from Johannesburg and 469 km from Durban and is open every day from 8:00 am at 17:00.
The Ponta do Ouro / Kosi Bay border has car rental services and a car park where you can store your vehicle for a daily fee.

Access the park by 4x4 vehicle only

  • Due to sandy routes inside the Park the use of 4×4 vehicles is compulsory.
  • Driver’s responsibility to ensure that vehicle is 4×4.
  • Driver must be trained in use of 4×4.
  • Non-4×4 vehicles will be turned away.
  • Tyre pressure must be at 180 kPa or lower.
  • Penalties and fees apply for non-compliance and recovery attempts.
  • Visitors acknowledge risks and dangers of wildlife, remote areas and limited communications.

Marine Area

From Maputo
Access via the Katembe bridge on a 108 km paved road.
Travel time is estimated at 1h20min.
To reach the accommodation it is highly recommended to use 4×4 vehicles, the roads surrounding the town being quite sandy.

From the Ressano Garcia border
Take the EN4 until Shoprite and then turn right on the EN2 until Boane, then head towards Ponta do Ouro, covering about 170 km.

From the Ponta do Ouro / Kosi Bay border
The best route to Ponta do Ouro is from the Ponta do Ouro / Kosi Bay border.
The border is at 673 km from Johannesburg and 469 km from Durban and is open every day from 8:00 am at 17:00.
To reach the accommodation it is highly recommended to use 4×4 vehicles, the roads surrounding the town being sandy.
